When it comes to zombie protection, you must prioritize your threats. The number one threat is being bitten by a zombie or becoming infected through other means. Being infected by not preparing for combat is a lot more likely than a group of zombies taking you down. As we stated in the "Anatomy of a Bite" article, kevlar gloves/forearm protectors and snake bite proof boots will go a long way in preventing infection. You must have this basic equipment to increase your chances of survival
Something you must also consider in a post apocalyptic scenario, other than being turned into a zombie, is the risk of any infection. If you are wounded and you do not properly take care of the wound, this could easily be a death sentence. Without antibiotics or a surgeon to properly flush deep wounds, the risk is high.
When coming in contact with the dead, you must be prepared for the diseases that they carry. Here is a list of three items you should integrate into your gear.
Latex gloves worn under your gear is really some cheap insurance against dying. They are extremely cheap, so there is no reason not to have these. Consider this for a second. If you are in melee combat, you are going to injure your hands. If you do not cover these wounds properly (with latex gloves), you are sure to get infected by the zombies' blood.
You would not want to have skin, blood, and bone from a body, whether a zombie or not enter your mouth. This should be common sense. You must properly protect yourself from having this happen by wearing a simple medical mask. This is extremely important when using a melee weapon or at close range with a firearm.
The same goes for your eyes. While in combat, you do not want to have bodily fluid enter your eyes for a lot of different reasons. Again, in a melee or close combat situation this is highly probably. Eye protection is a simple way of making sure this doesn't happen to you. The eye protection should also protect your peripherals and ideally be ballistic certified.
These three Zombie Protection items can save your life without spending top dollar for the best equipment you can buy. A lot of what goes into survival has to do with the basics. Just because you have spent top dollar on your gear and weapons doesn't mean anything if you can't survive a single blood splatter. Remember these items when considering zombie protection.
