Kel-Tec KSG shotgun

Kel-Tec KSG: Zombie Shotgun

Kel-Tec has begun to market their new and first shotgun, the KSG. The KSG will not be for sale until the third quarter of 2011. The MSRP is expected to be around $800 but will likely sell for less. This is pretty expensive for a shotgun but the advertised features may make it an ideal shotgun for zombie survival. This image belongs to Kel-Tec and can be viewed here.

KSG- SPECS

The KSG is a pump action, dual tube fed, 12 gauge shotgun. The KSG weighs in at a somewhat heavy for a shotgun, 6.9 pounds. The overall length of the weapon is 26.1 inches with a barrel length of a legal 18.5 inches.

The KSG is fed through two tubes below the barrel. The capacity is 14 shells in the tube and another shell in the chamber for a total of 15 shells. This would normally be unobtainable for a shotgun of this length, but the Bullpup design allows for maximum ammo capacity, maneuverability and accuracy compared to other shotguns 26.1 inches.

KSG- ZOMBIE KILLER

These are the reasons why this weapon has captured our attention. The short length compared to a mossberg 500 (Our recommended shotgun) allows for safer close quarters combat with zombies. The chance of a zombie grabbing your barrel is greatly reduced. This combined with the ammo capacity (15 or 8 on the Mossberg) seems to make it a better choice on paper at least.

The dual tubes also gives some interesting possibilities. Each tube holds 7 rounds and can be changed between with a switch behind the pistol grip. You would be able to keep buckshot in one tube and slugs in the other. We have not yet seen how easily the KSG can be reloaded in a zombie survival situation but we will eventually find out. Also since the KSG shotgun update, the tubes now how small "windows" in them to see your shell count.

Tony Knibb Asks:

"In your review of the Kel-Tec KSG you say that the switch behind the pistol grip changes between the tubes. I wonder, is it a manual action to switch from tube 1 to tube 2? Because I’d imagine that in a close quarters, 10 zombie attack, that could be a crucial time issue. You should address this in your review; for safety's sake."

Zombie Informer Response:

"Tony, thanks for your question. Yes the Kel-Tec KSG shotgun does have a manual switch behind the pistol grip. This can be considered a weakness with the KSG. The plus side of the two separate tubes is that it can hold 14+1 shells total which is more than the Mossberg 500 or Remmington 870. From the videos we've seen put out by Kel-Tec, the switch seems to be pretty quick. We are hoping to get our hands on one for testing so that we can confirm this though."
